  68. <h3 class="section">7.8 Function Multiversioning</h3>
  69. <a name="index-function-versions"></a>
  70. <p>With the GNU C++ front end, for x86 targets, you may specify multiple
  71. versions of a function, where each function is specialized for a
  72. specific target feature. At runtime, the appropriate version of the
  73. function is automatically executed depending on the characteristics of
  74. the execution platform. Here is an example.
  75. </p>
  76. <div class="smallexample">
  77. <pre class="smallexample">__attribute__ ((target (&quot;default&quot;)))
  78. int foo ()
  79. {
  80. // The default version of foo.
  81. return 0;
  82. }
  83. __attribute__ ((target (&quot;sse4.2&quot;)))
  84. int foo ()
  85. {
  86. // foo version for SSE4.2
  87. return 1;
  88. }
  89. __attribute__ ((target (&quot;arch=atom&quot;)))
  90. int foo ()
  91. {
  92. // foo version for the Intel ATOM processor
  93. return 2;
  94. }
  95. __attribute__ ((target (&quot;arch=amdfam10&quot;)))
  96. int foo ()
  97. {
  98. // foo version for the AMD Family 0x10 processors.
  99. return 3;
  100. }
  101. int main ()
  102. {
  103. int (*p)() = &amp;foo;
  104. assert ((*p) () == foo ());
  105. return 0;
  106. }
  107. </pre></div>
  108. <p>In the above example, four versions of function foo are created. The
  109. first version of foo with the target attribute &quot;default&quot; is the default
  110. version. This version gets executed when no other target specific
  111. version qualifies for execution on a particular platform. A new version
  112. of foo is created by using the same function signature but with a
  113. different target string. Function foo is called or a pointer to it is
  114. taken just like a regular function. GCC takes care of doing the
  115. dispatching to call the right version at runtime. Refer to the
  116. <a href="http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/FunctionMultiVersioning">GCC wiki on
  117. Function Multiversioning</a> for more details.
