- Each call to <code>readline()</code> starts in insert mode.

- <p>In overwrite mode, characters bound to <code>self-insert</code> replace
- the text at point rather than pushing the text to the right.
- Characters bound to <code>backward-delete-char</code> replace the character
- before point with a space.
