  66. <a name="index-operands-in-expressions"></a>
  67. <a name="index-arithmetic-operands"></a>
  68. <p><em>Arguments</em> are symbols, numbers or subexpressions. In other
  69. contexts arguments are sometimes called &ldquo;arithmetic operands&rdquo;. In
  70. this manual, to avoid confusing them with the &ldquo;instruction operands&rdquo; of
  71. the machine language, we use the term &ldquo;argument&rdquo; to refer to parts of
  72. expressions only, reserving the word &ldquo;operand&rdquo; to refer only to machine
  73. instruction operands.
  74. </p>
  75. <p>Symbols are evaluated to yield {<var>section</var> <var>NNN</var>} where
  76. <var>section</var> is one of text, data, bss, absolute,
  77. or undefined. <var>NNN</var> is a signed, 2&rsquo;s complement 32 bit
  78. integer.
  79. </p>
  80. <p>Numbers are usually integers.
  81. </p>
  82. <p>A number can be a flonum or bignum. In this case, you are warned
  83. that only the low order 32 bits are used, and <code>as</code> pretends
  84. these 32 bits are an integer. You may write integer-manipulating
  85. instructions that act on exotic constants, compatible with other
  86. assemblers.
  87. </p>
  88. <a name="index-subexpressions"></a>
  89. <p>Subexpressions are a left parenthesis &lsquo;<samp>(</samp>&rsquo; followed by an integer
  90. expression, followed by a right parenthesis &lsquo;<samp>)</samp>&rsquo;; or a prefix
  91. operator followed by an argument.
  92. </p>
