  68. <h3 class="section">3.2 Function-like Macros</h3>
  69. <a name="index-function_002dlike-macros"></a>
  70. <p>You can also define macros whose use looks like a function call. These
  71. are called <em>function-like macros</em>. To define a function-like macro,
  72. you use the same &lsquo;<samp>#define</samp>&rsquo; directive, but you put a pair of
  73. parentheses immediately after the macro name. For example,
  74. </p>
  75. <div class="smallexample">
  76. <pre class="smallexample">#define lang_init() c_init()
  77. lang_init()
  78. &rarr; c_init()
  79. </pre></div>
  80. <p>A function-like macro is only expanded if its name appears with a pair
  81. of parentheses after it. If you write just the name, it is left alone.
  82. This can be useful when you have a function and a macro of the same
  83. name, and you wish to use the function sometimes.
  84. </p>
  85. <div class="smallexample">
  86. <pre class="smallexample">extern void foo(void);
  87. #define foo() /* <span class="roman">optimized inline version</span> */
  88. &hellip;
  89. foo();
  90. funcptr = foo;
  91. </pre></div>
  92. <p>Here the call to <code>foo()</code> will use the macro, but the function
  93. pointer will get the address of the real function. If the macro were to
  94. be expanded, it would cause a syntax error.
  95. </p>
  96. <p>If you put spaces between the macro name and the parentheses in the
  97. macro definition, that does not define a function-like macro, it defines
  98. an object-like macro whose expansion happens to begin with a pair of
  99. parentheses.
  100. </p>
  101. <div class="smallexample">
  102. <pre class="smallexample">#define lang_init () c_init()
  103. lang_init()
  104. &rarr; () c_init()()
  105. </pre></div>
  106. <p>The first two pairs of parentheses in this expansion come from the
  107. macro. The third is the pair that was originally after the macro
  108. invocation. Since <code>lang_init</code> is an object-like macro, it does not
  109. consume those parentheses.
  110. </p>
  111. </body>
