<p><strong>Description</strong><br>
The <code>strlen</code> function works out the length of the string
starting at <code>*<var>str</var></code> by counting chararacters until it
reaches a <code>NULL</code> character.
</p>

<p><strong>Returns</strong><br>
<code>strlen</code> returns the character count.
</p>
<br>
<p><strong>Portability</strong><br>
<code>strlen</code> is ANSI C.
</p>
<p><code>strlen</code> requires no supporting OS subroutines.
