  72. <p>You can specify the name to be used in the assembler code for a C
  73. function or variable by writing the <code>asm</code> (or <code>__asm__</code>)
  74. keyword after the declarator.
  75. It is up to you to make sure that the assembler names you choose do not
  76. conflict with any other assembler symbols, or reference registers.

  79. <h4 class="subsubheading">Assembler names for data:</h4>

  82. <div class="smallexample">
  83. <pre class="smallexample">int foo asm (&quot;myfoo&quot;) = 2;

  89. <p>On systems where an underscore is normally prepended to the name of a C
  90. variable, this feature allows you to define names for the
  91. linker that do not start with an underscore.
  92. </p>
  93. <p>GCC does not support using this feature with a non-static local variable
  94. since such variables do not have assembler names. If you are
  95. trying to put the variable in a particular register, see
  96. <a href="Explicit-Register-Variables.html#Explicit-Register-Variables">Explicit Register Variables</a>.
