  70. <a name="index-constraints_002c-asm"></a>
  71. <a name="index-asm-constraints"></a>
  72. <p>Here are specific details on what constraint letters you can use with
  73. <code>asm</code> operands.
  74. Constraints can say whether
  75. an operand may be in a register, and which kinds of register; whether the
  76. operand can be a memory reference, and which kinds of address; whether the
  77. operand may be an immediate constant, and which possible values it may
  78. have. Constraints can also require two operands to match.
  79. Side-effects aren&rsquo;t allowed in operands of inline <code>asm</code>, unless
  80. &lsquo;<samp>&lt;</samp>&rsquo; or &lsquo;<samp>&gt;</samp>&rsquo; constraints are used, because there is no guarantee
  81. that the side effects will happen exactly once in an instruction that can update
  82. the addressing register.
