  68. <h4 class="subsection">10.3.4 Comparing ordered <code>poly_int</code>s</h4>
  69. <p>In cases where there is a definite link between two <code>poly_int</code>s,
  70. such as the outer and inner sizes of subregs, we usually require the sizes
  71. to be ordered by the <code>known_le</code> partial order. <code>poly_int</code> provides
  72. the following utility functions for ordered values:
  73. </p>
  74. <dl compact="compact">
  75. <dt>&lsquo;<samp>ordered_p (<var>a</var>, <var>b</var>)</samp>&rsquo;</dt>
  76. <dd><p>Return true if <var>a</var> and <var>b</var> are ordered by the <code>known_le</code>
  77. partial order.
  78. </p>
  79. </dd>
  80. <dt>&lsquo;<samp>ordered_min (<var>a</var>, <var>b</var>)</samp>&rsquo;</dt>
  81. <dd><p>Assert that <var>a</var> and <var>b</var> are ordered by <code>known_le</code> and return the
  82. minimum of the two. When using this function, please add a comment explaining
  83. why the values are known to be ordered.
  84. </p>
  85. </dd>
  86. <dt>&lsquo;<samp>ordered_max (<var>a</var>, <var>b</var>)</samp>&rsquo;</dt>
  87. <dd><p>Assert that <var>a</var> and <var>b</var> are ordered by <code>known_le</code> and return the
  88. maximum of the two. When using this function, please add a comment explaining
  89. why the values are known to be ordered.
  90. </p></dd>
  91. </dl>
  92. <p>For example, if a subreg has an outer mode of size <var>outer</var> and an
  93. inner mode of size <var>inner</var>:
  94. </p>
  95. <ul>
  96. <li> the subreg is complete if known_eq (<var>inner</var>, <var>outer</var>)
  97. </li><li> otherwise, the subreg is paradoxical if known_le (<var>inner</var>, <var>outer</var>)
  98. </li><li> otherwise, the subreg is partial if known_le (<var>outer</var>, <var>inner</var>)
  99. </li><li> otherwise, the subreg is ill-formed
  100. </li></ul>
  101. <p>Thus the subreg is only valid if
  102. &lsquo;<samp>ordered_p (<var>outer</var>, <var>inner</var>)</samp>&rsquo; is true. If this condition
  103. is already known to be true then:
  104. </p>
  105. <ul>
  106. <li> the subreg is complete if known_eq (<var>inner</var>, <var>outer</var>)
  107. </li><li> the subreg is paradoxical if maybe_lt (<var>inner</var>, <var>outer</var>)
  108. </li><li> the subreg is partial if maybe_lt (<var>outer</var>, <var>inner</var>)
  109. </li></ul>
  110. <p>with the three conditions being mutually exclusive.
  111. </p>
  112. <p>Code that checks whether a subreg is valid would therefore generally
  113. check whether <code>ordered_p</code> holds (in addition to whatever other
  114. checks are required for subreg validity). Code that is dealing
  115. with existing subregs can assert that <code>ordered_p</code> holds
  116. and use either of the classifications above.
  117. </p>
