  68. <h3 class="section">24.1 Loading Plugins</h3>
  69. <p>Plugins are supported on platforms that support <samp>-ldl
  70. -rdynamic</samp> as well as Windows/MinGW. They are loaded by the compiler
  71. using <code>dlopen</code> or equivalent and invoked at pre-determined
  72. locations in the compilation process.
  73. </p>
  74. <p>Plugins are loaded with
  75. </p>
  76. <p><samp>-fplugin=/path/to/<var>name</var>.<var>ext</var></samp> <samp>-fplugin-arg-<var>name</var>-<var>key1</var>[=<var>value1</var>]</samp>
  77. </p>
  78. <p>Where <var>name</var> is the plugin name and <var>ext</var> is the platform-specific
  79. dynamic library extension. It should be <code>dll</code> on Windows/MinGW,
  80. <code>dylib</code> on Darwin/Mac OS X, and <code>so</code> on all other platforms.
  81. The plugin arguments are parsed by GCC and passed to respective
  82. plugins as key-value pairs. Multiple plugins can be invoked by
  83. specifying multiple <samp>-fplugin</samp> arguments.
  84. </p>
  85. <p>A plugin can be simply given by its short name (no dots or
  86. slashes). When simply passing <samp>-fplugin=<var>name</var></samp>, the plugin is
  87. loaded from the <samp>plugin</samp> directory, so <samp>-fplugin=<var>name</var></samp> is
  88. the same as <samp>-fplugin=`gcc -print-file-name=plugin`/<var>name</var>.<var>ext</var></samp>,
  89. using backquote shell syntax to query the <samp>plugin</samp> directory.
