64.
23.1.2 User-defined Command Hooks

65.
66.
67.
68.
69.
You may define hooks, which are a special kind of user-defined
70. command. Whenever you run the command ‘<samp>foo</samp>’, if the user-defined
71. command ‘<samp>hook-foo</samp>’ exists, it is executed (with no arguments)
72. before that command.
73.

74.
75.
76.
A hook may also be defined which is run after the command you executed.
77. Whenever you run the command ‘<samp>foo</samp>’, if the user-defined command
78. ‘<samp>hookpost-foo</samp>’ exists, it is executed (with no arguments) after
79. that command. Post-execution hooks may exist simultaneously with
80. pre-execution hooks, for the same command.
81.

82.
It is valid for a hook to call the command which it hooks. If this
83. occurs, the hook is not re-executed, thereby avoiding infinite recursion.
84.

85.
86.
In addition, a pseudo-command, ‘<samp>stop</samp>’ exists. Defining
87. (‘<samp>hook-stop</samp>’) makes the associated commands execute every time
88. execution stops in your program: before breakpoint commands are run,
89. displays are printed, or the stack frame is printed.
90.

91.
For example, to ignore
SIGALRM
signals while
92. single-stepping, but treat them normally during normal execution,
93. you could define:
94.

95.

96.
define hook-stop
97. handle SIGALRM nopass
98. end
99. define hook-run
100. handle SIGALRM pass
101. end
102. define hook-continue
103. handle SIGALRM pass
104. end
105.

106.
As a further example, to hook at the beginning and end of the
echo

107. command, and to add extra text to the beginning and end of the message,
108. you could define:
109.

110.

111.
define hook-echo
112. echo <<<---
113. end
114. define hookpost-echo
115. echo --->>>\n
116. end
117. (gdb) echo Hello World
118. <<<---Hello World--->>>
119. (gdb)
120.

121.
You can define a hook for any single-word command in GDB, but
122. not for command aliases; you should define a hook for the basic command
123. name, e.g.
backtrace
rather than
bt
.
124. You can hook a multi-word command by adding
hook-
or
125.
hookpost-
to the last word of the command, e.g.
126. ‘<samp>define target hook-remote</samp>’ to add a hook to ‘<samp>target remote</samp>’.
127.

128.
If an error occurs during the execution of your hook, execution of
129. GDB commands stops and GDB issues a prompt
130. (before the command that you actually typed had a chance to run).
131.

132.
If you try to define a hook which does not match any known command, you
133. get a warning from the
define
command.
134.
