  66. <p>A <em>target</em> is the execution environment occupied by your program.
  67. </p>
  68. <p>Often, <small>GDB</small> runs in the same host environment as your program;
  69. in that case, the debugging target is specified as a side effect when
  70. you use the <code>file</code> or <code>core</code> commands. When you need more
  71. flexibility&mdash;for example, running <small>GDB</small> on a physically separate
  72. host, or controlling a standalone system over a serial port or a
  73. realtime system over a TCP/IP connection&mdash;you can use the <code>target</code>
  74. command to specify one of the target types configured for <small>GDB</small>
  75. (see <a href="Target-Commands.html#Target-Commands">Commands for Managing Targets</a>).

  78. <p>It is possible to build <small>GDB</small> for several different <em>target
  79. architectures</em>. When <small>GDB</small> is built like that, you can choose
