  65. <p>Whenever <small>GDB</small> prints a value memory will be allocated within
  66. <small>GDB</small> to hold the contents of the value. It is possible in
  67. some languages with dynamic typing systems, that an invalid program
  68. may indicate a value that is incorrectly large, this in turn may cause
  69. <small>GDB</small> to try and allocate an overly large amount of memory.
  70. </p>
  71. <dl compact="compact">
  72. <dd><a name="index-set-max_002dvalue_002dsize"></a>
  73. </dd>
  74. <dt><code>set max-value-size <var>bytes</var></code></dt>
  75. <dt><code>set max-value-size unlimited</code></dt>
  76. <dd><p>Set the maximum size of memory that <small>GDB</small> will allocate for the
  77. contents of a value to <var>bytes</var>, trying to display a value that
  78. requires more memory than that will result in an error.
  79. </p>
  80. <p>Setting this variable does not effect values that have already been
  81. allocated within <small>GDB</small>, only future allocations.
  82. </p>
  83. <p>There&rsquo;s a minimum size that <code>max-value-size</code> can be set to in
  84. order that <small>GDB</small> can still operate correctly, this minimum is
  85. currently 16 bytes.
  86. </p>
  87. <p>The limit applies to the results of some subexpressions as well as to
  88. complete expressions. For example, an expression denoting a simple
  89. integer component, such as <code>x.y.z</code>, may fail if the size of
  90. <var>x.y</var> is dynamic and exceeds <var>bytes</var>. On the other hand,
  91. <small>GDB</small> is sometimes clever; the expression <code>A[i]</code>, where
  92. <var>A</var> is an array variable with non-constant size, will generally
  93. succeed regardless of the bounds on <var>A</var>, as long as the component
  94. size is less than <var>bytes</var>.
  95. </p>
  96. <p>The default value of <code>max-value-size</code> is currently 64k.
  97. </p>
