  81. <p>The linker uses three special entry points in the BFD target

  82. vector.  It is not necessary to write special routines for

  83. these entry points when creating a new BFD back end, since

  84. generic versions are provided.  However, writing them can

  85. speed up linking and make it use significantly less runtime

  86. memory.

  88. <p>The first routine creates a hash table used by the other

  89. routines.  The second routine adds the symbols from an object

  90. file to the hash table.  The third routine takes all the

  91. object files and links them together to create the output

  92. file.  These routines are designed so that the linker proper

  93. does not need to know anything about the symbols in the object

  94. files that it is linking.  The linker merely arranges the

  95. sections as directed by the linker script and lets BFD handle

  96. the details of symbols and relocs.

  98. <p>The second routine and third routines are passed a pointer to

  99. a <code>struct bfd_link_info</code> structure (defined in

  100. <code>bfdlink.h</code>) which holds information relevant to the link,

  101. including the linker hash table (which was created by the

  102. first routine) and a set of callback functions to the linker

  103. proper.

  105. <p>The generic linker routines are in <code>linker.c</code>, and use the

  106. header file <code>genlink.h</code>.  As of this writing, the only back

  107. ends which have implemented versions of these routines are

  108. a.out (in <code>aoutx.h</code>) and ECOFF (in <code>ecoff.c</code>).  The a.out

  109. routines are used as examples throughout this section.
