  68. <h4 class="subsection">3.10.3 Swallowing the Semicolon</h4>
  69. <a name="index-semicolons-_0028after-macro-calls_0029"></a>
  70. <p>Often it is desirable to define a macro that expands into a compound
  71. statement. Consider, for example, the following macro, that advances a
  72. pointer (the argument <code>p</code> says where to find it) across whitespace
  73. characters:
  74. </p>
  75. <div class="smallexample">
  76. <pre class="smallexample">#define SKIP_SPACES(p, limit) \
  77. { char *lim = (limit); \
  78. while (p &lt; lim) { \
  79. if (*p++ != ' ') { \
  80. p--; break; }}}
  81. </pre></div>
  82. <p>Here backslash-newline is used to split the macro definition, which must
  83. be a single logical line, so that it resembles the way such code would
  84. be laid out if not part of a macro definition.
  85. </p>
  86. <p>A call to this macro might be <code>SKIP_SPACES (p, lim)</code>. Strictly
  87. speaking, the call expands to a compound statement, which is a complete
  88. statement with no need for a semicolon to end it. However, since it
  89. looks like a function call, it minimizes confusion if you can use it
  90. like a function call, writing a semicolon afterward, as in
  91. <code>SKIP_SPACES (p, lim);</code>
  92. </p>
  93. <p>This can cause trouble before <code>else</code> statements, because the
  94. semicolon is actually a null statement. Suppose you write
  95. </p>
  96. <div class="smallexample">
  97. <pre class="smallexample">if (*p != 0)
  98. SKIP_SPACES (p, lim);
  99. else &hellip;
  100. </pre></div>
  101. <p>The presence of two statements&mdash;the compound statement and a null
  102. statement&mdash;in between the <code>if</code> condition and the <code>else</code>
  103. makes invalid C code.
  104. </p>
  105. <p>The definition of the macro <code>SKIP_SPACES</code> can be altered to solve
  106. this problem, using a <code>do &hellip; while</code> statement. Here is how:
  107. </p>
  108. <div class="smallexample">
  109. <pre class="smallexample">#define SKIP_SPACES(p, limit) \
  110. do { char *lim = (limit); \
  111. while (p &lt; lim) { \
  112. if (*p++ != ' ') { \
  113. p--; break; }}} \
  114. while (0)
  115. </pre></div>
  116. <p>Now <code>SKIP_SPACES (p, lim);</code> expands into
  117. </p>
  118. <div class="smallexample">
  119. <pre class="smallexample">do {&hellip;} while (0);
  120. </pre></div>
  121. <p>which is one statement. The loop executes exactly once; most compilers
  122. generate no extra code for it.
  123. </p>
  124. <hr>
  125. <div class="header">
  126. <p>
