54.
4.55
setbuf
—specify full buffering for a file or stream

 55.
 56.
Synopsis
 57.

 58.
#include <stdio.h>
 59. void setbuf(FILE *<var>fp</var>, char *<var>buf</var>);
 60.

 61.
Description
62.
setbuf
specifies that output to the file or stream identified by <var>fp</var>
 63. should be fully buffered. All output for this file will go to a
 64. buffer (of size
BUFSIZ
, specified in ‘
stdio.h
’). Output will
 65. be passed on to the host system only when the buffer is full, or when
 66. an input operation intervenes.
 67.

 68.
You may, if you wish, supply your own buffer by passing a pointer to
 69. it as the argument <var>buf</var>. It must have size
BUFSIZ
. You can
 70. also use
NULL
as the value of <var>buf</var>, to signal that the
 71.
setbuf
function is to allocate the buffer.
 72.

 73.
74.
Warnings
75. You may only use
setbuf
before performing any file operation other
 76. than opening the file.
 77.

 78.
If you supply a non-null <var>buf</var>, you must ensure that the associated
 79. storage continues to be available until you close the stream
 80. identified by <var>fp</var>.
 81.

 82.
83.
Returns
84.
setbuf
does not return a result.
 85.

 86.
87.
Portability
88. Both ANSI C and the System V Interface Definition (Issue 2) require
 89.
setbuf
. However, they differ on the meaning of a
NULL
buffer
 90. pointer: the SVID issue 2 specification says that a
NULL
buffer
 91. pointer requests unbuffered output. For maximum portability, avoid
 92.
NULL
buffer pointers.
 93.

 94.
Supporting OS subroutines required:
close
,
fstat
,
isatty
,
 95.
lseek
,
read
,
sbrk
,
write
.
 96.
