67.
68.
69.
70.
You can implement new convenience functions (see Convenience Vars)
71. in Python. A convenience function is an instance of a subclass of the
72. class
gdb.Function
.
73.

74.

75.
Function: Function.__init__ (name)

76.

The initializer for
Function
registers the new function with
77. GDB. The argument <var>name</var> is the name of the function,
78. a string. The function will be visible to the user as a convenience
79. variable of type
internal function
, whose name is the same as
80. the given <var>name</var>.
81.

82.
The documentation for the new function is taken from the documentation
83. string for the new class.
84.

85.

86.
Function: Function.invoke (<var>*args</var>)

87.

When a convenience function is evaluated, its arguments are converted
88. to instances of
gdb.Value
, and then the function’s
89.
invoke
method is called. Note that GDB does not
90. predetermine the arity of convenience functions. Instead, all
91. available arguments are passed to
invoke
, following the
92. standard Python calling convention. In particular, a convenience
93. function can have default values for parameters without ill effect.
94.

95.
The return value of this method is used as its value in the enclosing
96. expression. If an ordinary Python value is returned, it is converted
97. to a
gdb.Value
following the usual rules.
98.

99.
The following code snippet shows how a trivial convenience function can
100. be implemented in Python:
101.

102.

103.
class Greet (gdb.Function):
104. """Return string to greet someone.
105. Takes a name as argument."""
106. def __init__ (self):
107. super (Greet, self).__init__ ("greet")
108. def invoke (self, name):
109. return "Hello, %s!" % name.string ()
110. Greet ()
111.

112.
The last line instantiates the class, and is necessary to trigger the
113. registration of the function with GDB. Depending on how the
114. Python code is read into GDB, you may need to import the
115.
gdb
module explicitly.
116.

117.
Now you can use the function in an expression:
118.

119.

120.
(gdb) print $greet("Bob")
121. $1 = "Hello, Bob!"
122.

123.
